Tajuddin Ahmed

Tajuddin Ahmed (b. 1954) is a distinguished Bangladeshi contemporary artist whose career spans more than four decades. Born and raised in Old Dhaka, his early experiences of dense urban architecture, narrow alleyways, and active dockyards profoundly shaped his artistic vision. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, in 1980, emerging as a painter deeply connected to the social and cultural realities of Bangladesh. His early works were influenced by folk traditions and realistic urban landscapes. By the late 1980s, Ahmed shifted toward gestural abstract expressionism, where texture became a central element of his practice. Using thick layers of oil and acrylic on large canvases, he created richly tactile surfaces with a strong sense of physical depth. Bold brushstrokes and a palette ranging from muted earth tones to vibrant colors define his visual language. After migrating to Toronto, Canada, in 2008, Ahmed’s work developed a more reflective and introspective quality. Experiencing life as an outsider, he began exploring themes of solitude, memory, and belonging, often merging recollections of Dhaka with Canadian landscapes. His recent Faces series, created during the pandemic, marked a notable shift toward detailed miniature portraits that reflect human resilience and emotional endurance. Ahmed has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, Australia, and beyond, establishing his position as a sensitive interpreter of the human condition.
